SA x Wings Cross Country 2024:

A showcase of grit and team spirit

The month of February marked the annual Wings Cross Country event, a highlight in the calendar for many Singaporean athletes. Despite the National School Games (NSG) Cross Country not being held at Bedok this year - a change that initially dampened the spirits of many - our athletes rose to the occasion, demonstrating remarkable resilience and dedication.

This cross country event saw a unique blend of competition from various schools forming mixed teams, further bolstering camaraderie and friendly competition. Team Fabian, in particular, delivered outstanding performances across multiple categories:

  • U18 Girls: 2nd Place

  • U21 Boys: 1st Place

  • U21 Girls: 3rd Place

Ye Jun: U21 Boys Champion

Ye Jun emerged victorious in the U21 Boys category, clocking a stellar time of 16:35 for the 4.8km road race. His victory was a testament to his rigorous training and unwavering determination. In his post-race interview, Ye Jun shared his thoughts on the race and his preparation:

“The only thoughts I had during the race were if there was anyone in my age category ahead of me as well as hoping the pain would end soon...to my surprise I ended up getting first in my age group and my team also ended up winning.”

Xin Rong: U21 Girls Silver Medalist

Finishing 2nd in the U18 Girls category with a time of 15:38 for the 3.8km race, Xin Rong has demonstrated remarkable speed and endurance. Xin Rong’s disciplined training regimen and her ability to stay focused under pressure have definitely been key factors to her success.

Swee Lin: A Testament to Perseverance

Swee Lin finished 5th in the U18 Girls category with a time of 16:42. Swee Lin’s training is characterised by her relentless drive to improve and her ability to learn from each race, making her one to watch out for in future competitions. Reflecting on her performance, Swee Lin said:

“I was determined to give my all and help my team clinch podium position. As for me, this race was more for the team’s achievement. I knew we had a good chance of walking away with a team medal as our team comprised of strong runners, and this further sparked my goal of helping the five of us walk away with gold medals.”

Building a Legacy of Excellence

The stories of Ye Jun, Xin Rong and Swee Lin highlight the spirit of FWCC’s distance team - one that is defined by hard work, resilience and a supportive community. Their successes are not just personal victories but also a testament to the collective effort of our coaches and team mates.

As these athletes continue to train and compete, they are not only setting high standards for themselves but also inspiring their peers and younger athletes to pursue excellence.
