“ I joined FWCC when I was 10. My siblings were both already in track and field, and I would feel left out whenever they started talking about events and competitions. It was like there was an invisible barrier between us. After being told I had the potential for track, along with not wanting to feel left out, I joined FWCC. I did not plan to start track competitively at first. It was my brother that participated in competitions while my sister and I joined to stay fit.
When I was 11, I transferred to track in school. Before that, I was in a uniform group. Despite joining at 11, I was chosen to participate in NSG that year. Because of that, I started training harder in hopes to qualify for finals. In the end, I got 7th place. I was elated. I knew I would definitely have not been chosen for Nationals or got into finals if it wasn’t for training with FWCC as my foundation. I wanted to aim higher for the next year, to get top 3.
However, the pandemic hit and training was canceled for both FWCC and school CCA. I stopped exercising much, and exercised only once or twice a week. FWCC sent us different workouts to do at home to keep up our fitness. Of course, my stamina dropped as I trained much less than before. Thankfully, I still managed to DSA into St. Nicholas Secondary with track. When COVID regulations relaxed, I started to train more often. My sister and I would train at the gym with other club mates and the coaches.
In 2022, with the help of Tean Fabian, I managed to get 1st for the 200m and 3rd for the 100m. In the subsequent years, I managed to enter the finals for both my events. Team Fabian has allowed me to improve greatly on my running. With them, I learnt new techniques, I started to achieve personal bests and enjoyed training with them. The coaches would joke around to make us laugh and always made sure that we were hydrated and that we felt well enough to continue the different workouts. They provided personalized feedback and were very patient with me. The training was very detailed and organized, and I managed to improve on different aspects of running, such as my technique and endurance. I feel more confident in my performance now, and I no longer go to competitions feeling anxious or worried. The coaches are extremely caring and attentive to our needs.
Overall, I am very satisfied at my club. The coaches are very caring and supportive towards the athletes. There is a very strong relationship between the coach and athlete. They have allowed me to improve on running as well as my own character. I learnt to persevere and not give up in the face of challenges, and I am eternally grateful for how much they have done for me. “
